"breach of oath" lord shiva

Lord Shiva is one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. He is the supreme god of destruction and regeneration, and the patron of yoga and meditation. He is also known for his fierce and unpredictable nature, and his wrath towards those who break their vows or oaths.

One of the most famous stories of Lord Shiva's anger is the tale of Daksha, the father of his first wife, Sati. Daksha was a powerful king and a leader of the Prajapatis, the progenitors of mankind. He organized a grand sacrifice, called a yajna, to which he invited all the gods and sages, except for Shiva and Sati. He despised Shiva for his unconventional and ascetic lifestyle, and considered him unworthy of his daughter.

Sati heard about the yajna and decided to attend it, despite Shiva's warning. She hoped to reconcile with her father and persuade him to respect her husband. However, when she arrived at the yajna, she was humiliated and insulted by Daksha, who publicly denounced Shiva as a wild and uncultured outcast. Sati could not bear the dishonor of her husband, and in a fit of rage and sorrow, she immolated herself in the sacrificial fire.

When Shiva learned about Sati's death, he was overcome with grief and fury. He tore a lock of his hair and threw it on the ground, from which emerged two fierce beings: Virabhadra and Bhadrakali. He ordered them to destroy the yajna and kill Daksha and his followers. Virabhadra and Bhadrakali led an army of Shiva's ganas, or attendants, to the site of the yajna, where they wreaked havoc and slaughtered many of the guests. They also severed Daksha's head and threw it into the fire.

Shiva himself arrived at the scene and saw the carnage. He picked up Sati's charred body and carried it on his shoulder, wandering around the world in a state of madness. His dance of grief and rage threatened to destroy the universe, as he unleashed his power in all directions. The other gods were terrified and appealed to Vishnu, the god of preservation, to intervene. Vishnu used his discus weapon to cut Sati's body into pieces, which fell on different places on earth. These places became known as Shakti Peethas, or seats of power, where Sati's energy is worshipped.

Shiva eventually calmed down and forgave Daksha, restoring his life with a goat's head. He also accepted Parvati, the reincarnation of Sati, as his second wife. However, he never forgot Daksha's breach of oath, which caused him to lose his beloved Sati.
